Gift Guide to Polar Bear Kids

0

Our simple Holiday gift guide for outdoor kids. A little more in-depth gift guide is needed if you are really serious about your outdoor play in all kinds of   weather. You need to be smart like a polar bear kid. Please note this list is for only very hardcore kids and parents/educators playing outside in all kinds of weather.

1) Look for outerwear that makes it easy for movement. A  one-piece suit is best for small children (0-4 years old) because it helps hold body heat in and you don’t have any gaps where snow and cold air can sneak in. It also allows better movement for more activity, which generates more body heat and reduces the need for more layers.

Choose a snowsuit that is not too big and puffy for small children. Big puffy snowsuits make it hard for children to move around. Make sure the snowsuit is also waterproof. If you choose a  two-piece suit, look for bib pants that cover the chest instead of just pants. This way you reduce the gap where snow and cold air can sneak in. Make sure your pants /suit has cuffs that are elastic and snuggly fit over the boots. I find it helpful to have an elastic strap that goes under the boots and keeps the pants from riding up.

2)Thermal underwear: The 3 choices are wool, synthetic/wool mix or synthetic. No cotton. You can get organic wool from Warmth and Weather

3) Wool socks

4) Balaclava: Visit any Scandinavian country and you will see kids wearing balaclavas in the winter. It is not a fashion statement; it is simply good Scandinavian design, where form follows function. It is a scarf and hat all in one, that kids tend to not pull off and is a must for skating, skiing, sledding or just playing outside. If you need a cute hat just put the funny animal hat on the top of the balaclava.

5) Boots and that the boots are big enough so they can wiggle their feet. Make sure the boots are waterproof.

6) Splash pants: Great for slushy days but also when spring puddles arrive. As an outdoor playgroup leader and blogger, Courtney says, “These pants are great in so many ways- EVERY CHILD SHOULD HAVE A PAIR!  Put them right over their fleeces or jackets if it’s cold out and  they’re protected whether they’re digging in dirt,  jumping in puddles or sledding in really wet snow. Greatest invention ever.

7) Mittens are warmer than gloves, and it is easier to put on small hands. Look for waterproof mittens.

8) Reflectors: We think getting dressed for the weather and increasing your visibility is one of the most important steps anyone can do to enjoy being outside while preventing accidents. Great as stocking stuffers too ! Buy them here :
