Gearing up for winter: No bad weather, only bad clothing

0

Being from Norway I grew up with the saying “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing”. Now granted, if you spend some time in Norway you will discover that Norway has very unpredictable weather. So let’s face it, if people did not live by this saying they would not go out much…

I asked a friend from Toronto, Elin Kaia Marley, an outdoor Educator/Coordinator , what she thinks the main differences are about outdoor living in Canada and Norway? She had this to say:

“I find that the biggest difference between Canada and Scandinavia in terms of outdoor living is that Scandinavians seem to really live by their saying, ‘There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing’”, said Marley. “In Southern Ontario indoor recess is a pretty common occurrence, when the weather is “too” cold, hot, rainy… In Norway and Sweden, I always really enjoyed seeing lots of school kids playing outside in all kinds of weather, throughout the whole year. Even in the pouring rain, kids were sent outside for recess, just dressed in proper rain gear.”

You might be thinking this is extreme, but my kids love to be outside in the winter and in the rain. They do not complain about being cold after 10 minutes or that it is boring to be playing outside. They love to be outside and even my 2 year old loves playing outside when she has on the right clothing.

Gear up for the winter
While the fall weather is still nice, get out there and gear up for the winter, so you can get out and play.Educate yourself and be prepared for the elements. As you know we use the layering system here at ActivekidsClub.com and we use our clothing for all our outdoor activities; like playing in the backyard, skiing, cross country skiing, sledding and skating.

This what an outdoor kid needs for the winter:

Thermal underwear,

Middle layer

Shell

Wool socks

Hat that will cover kids ears

Waterproof gloves and boots
