Summer is here and we all have been warned about not letting our kids have a total break from reading and writing this summer. For us it is important to spend time outside and to try to incorporate writing and reading into our outdoor lifestyle. It simply does not have to conflict with each other.

Here are a few activities and ideas to practice writing and reading and still enjoy being outside.

ring your books with you on your outdoor adventures. Yesterday we went to the beach and I asked my daughter to bring some books along that had a theme with the sea.

Capturing summer stories in a book: make sure your kids have a notebook and a pencil available for notes. Smaller kids can draw images of their outdoor and nature adventures. In life there are many ways to create stories after an experience. It can be an outdoor adventure or a dragonfly miracle.

A few days ago we found a dragonfly with a broken wing inside our house. After a bit of wrangling we managed to get the dragonfly on the balcony and we didn’t think he would survive, but then after a miracle of nature he managed to fly away. In her notebook my daughter wrote a story and drew an image of a dragonfly. We will continue capturing our small and big summer adventures in her book.
