Outdoor Play Birthday Party

This is not a post about the perfect planned party; instead it is about a low key outdoor birthday party.  As some of you might know I always do outdoor birthdays for my kids even in the winter, but this summer I was very excited to plan for the first time an outdoor party in the summer, for my daughter’s 2 year birthday party.  So was my winter born child, she planned how “ her” Fairy party it was going to be: making fairy homes, wands, potions, crowns and fairy cupcakes of course. Then it hit me, my toddler did not care for any of this.

Instead I started to plan a low key outdoor play party in my urban backyard.

We planned to do 4 activities for my toddler’s birthday party.

Fishing in the backyard

Bubble fun and giant bubbles

Singing and games, my friend Debra, a previous  outdoor playgroup leader in the Beach did some songs and games with the kids.

Fun with chalks (we ended up not doing it )

Food we served for the party:

Ham and cheese pitas, tuna melts shaped with cookie cutters, a big success for kids and adults.

Fresh fruit and berries

Cupcakes with wild blueberry frosting, with a lollipop

I used this recipe for cupcakes from Martha Stewart.

A great way to get a wonderful purple color is to use some blueberries in the frosting and as you know they are in season, so it is easy to use blueberries in the frosting. They are in season, natural and pretty.

2 (8 ounce) packages of cream cheese (room temperature)

1-cup butter (room temperature)

1/4 cup of blueberries

1 cup of icing sugar

Mix together butter and cream cheese. In a separate bowl use an immersion blender to crush blueberries fine. Use a sifter to get seeds and skins out of the blueberry mixture.

Mix it together
