If you use a reflector you are reducing your risk for being hit by a car by 85%. Without a reflector the driver of a car will only see you after 25-30 metres, but a reflector can be seen 140 metres in the headlights. This can give the driver 10 seconds to react instead of 2 seconds when you are using a reflector.
