We recently spent a week in Florida, plus about 2 days driving each way. As a family more interested in the natural than the commercial, here are our highlights.
Savannah, Georgia
Driving from Toronto to Florida, I highly recommend Savannah, Georgia as a stopping off point, at least for a day excursion. Normally our kids wouldn’t be super excited about beautiful architecture and revolutionary urban planning but after a long day of driving, they were just happy to be running around outside (without coats!) so we were free to wander around and take it all in. The city is very flat so easy walking and has plenty of interesting kid-friendly diversions. The Pirate House Restaurant made for a fun lunch (though it’s a little over priced).
Crystal River
For outdoor loving families, our first Florida destination is a must; Crystal River!Located on the northern gulf coast Crystal River is kind of off the beaten path for most visitors. But a truly unique experience awaits those who go; swimming with Manatees!Memories to last a lifetime guaranteed! One good tip for Crystal River is to book accommodation ahead. It’s a small town with limited hotels so it’s better not to take chances.
Disney, Magic Kingdom
For many, Florida = Disney. Not a big priority for us, but I have to say we did enjoy a day at the Magic Kingdom. It’s pricey but were at the gates when the park opened (bonus you get to see the daily park opening ceremony) and stayed for the fireworks so we felt we got our money’s worth! If you keep your head on straight (do you really need mouse ears?) and pack a lunch you can get through the day without breaking the bank or feeling like you’ve totally gone down the rabbit hole of commercial craziness. Stay in Kissimmee; it’s near the parks and most of the accommodations have kitchens so it’s easy to prepare your own food.
Beaches
For me, the beach is heaven. And the Atlantic coast is mainly beach from Daytona on down to Miami and beyond. The surf is fantastic and our kids spent endless hours playing in the waves, blowing bubbles and building castles. There are many state parks and plenty of not so touristy ways to enjoy fun in the sun! And if you need a souvenir fix, Cocoa Beach is a fun place to spend a day. Our kids enjoyed the Ron Jon Surf shop and the beach is great, if a little touristy!
The Georgia Sea Turtle Center
Sad to be driving north, an over-night stop in Jekyll Island Georgia cheered us all up! The Georgia Sea Turtle Centre was a highlight. The beach is lovely and you get to experience true Southern charm and fascinating history.
